Routt County Court Record Requests
The Clerk of Court at the Routt County Combined Court keeps the files. Those files cover both the District Court and County Court dockets. Without a case number, begin with the free hearing calendar. Once you know what you need, the Colorado Record/Document Request Form handles requests. Use it for an ROA or a particular filing. Walk-in service happens at 1955 Shield Drive, Unit 200. Unsure about the right channel or a case number? Call 970-879-5020 ext. 7 and staff will sort it out. Eligible filings can go to routtclerk@judicial.state.co.us. The web form remains the standard route for record requests by email, mail, or fax.
- Identify whether the matter is in state District Court, County Court, or one of the four municipal courts.
- Search the state calendar for a case number if the event is public and scheduled.
- Select Routt as the record location and enter the case, year, type, and party information.
- Choose Register of Action, each needed document, and certification only when required.
- Review the clerk's quote, provide identification if required, and arrange delivery or pickup.
City cases take a different turn. When a citation or case arose under a Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Oak Creek, or Yampa ordinance, contact that municipal court clerk directly.
Routt Record Form Checkboxes
Case type drives the request form. Criminal boxes cover the complaint or information and the disposition or sentence order. A protection order and the ticket get their own boxes too. Civil boxes offer an order for judgment. So do a transcript of judgment, a satisfaction of judgment, and a protection order. For family cases, the form lists a decree, a parenting plan, or a separation agreement. A support order or a petition can be checked as well. Probate choices run from letters and wills to trusts, applications, petitions, closing papers, and claims.
A Register of Action option appears too, along with certification or exemplification. Expect to give contact details, the case number, case type, year, county, and party names. Add a date of birth when known, plus any other facts that help the clerk locate the docket. The official Colorado Record/Document Request Form shows the full request interface.
One request rule stands out here. Checking an ROA does not automatically pull in every pleading, order, or certified copy.
Kinds of Court Records
Different products answer different questions. A calendar tells you when and where a hearing sits. The Register of Action gives a short chronological summary. That summary may include charges, sentences, and minute orders. For substance, turn to a filed document. It holds the complaint, motion, order, judgment, decree, ticket, or other court paper itself. Certification or exemplification adds clerk authentication to a chosen copy of any Routt County court record.
- Hearing calendars and printable setting results
- Register of Action or ROA case summaries
- Complaints, petitions, tickets, motions, and responses
- Minute orders, judgments, decrees, and disposition orders
- Plain, certified, or exemplified copies
Transcripts sit in their own lane. A Transcript of Judgment is a clerk product about a civil judgment. It is not a word-for-word account of a hearing. Routt County routes hearing-transcript requests through the local court reporter process. The local court also states that digital recordings are unavailable under Chief Judge Order 19-02.
Four Routt Record Products
Many delays trace back to ordering the wrong product. The docket calendar, ROA, document, and certified copy all relate to one Routt County case. They are not interchangeable. A good request names the case and the exact item.
| Product | What It Shows | Custodian or Channel |
|---|---|---|
| Docket calendar | Current hearing date, time, type, room, and appearance method | Free Judicial Branch search |
| Register of Action | Brief official chronology with entries, charges, sentences, and minute orders | Combined Court clerk |
| Filed document | Actual complaint, order, judgment, decree, ticket, or other selected paper | Combined Court clerk |
| Certified copy | Clerk-authenticated reproduction of one document | Combined Court clerk |
A calendar printout from an official portal is still not certified. Only the Routt County clerk authenticates the court product you asked for.
Court Records: What They Contain
What sits inside a Routt County court case record depends on its type and access status. A full file may hold the initiating pleading, service returns, answers, motions, orders, hearing minutes, the judgment or disposition, and post-judgment entries. An ROA only summarizes that activity. It does not reproduce every page. The public calendar stays narrower still.
| Case identity | Case number, class, location, and party or caption information |
|---|---|
| Chronology | Filed events, minute orders, settings, and disposition in the ROA |
| Pleadings | Complaint, petition, answer, motion, and other selected filings |
| Rulings | Orders, judgments, decrees, and sentence or disposition records |
| Limits | Protected identifiers and entire restricted categories may be withheld or redacted |
Do not count on exhibits through an ROA request. Evidence can stay subject to custody, return, evidentiary, or sealing orders.
Routt Court Record CORA Mix-Up
The Colorado Open Records Act governs government administrative records. It is not the usual route to a Routt County judicial ROA, decree, or sentence order. Those court records belong to the state Judicial Branch clerk and its request process. Criminal justice agency records can fall under the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act too. They never become court filings through that path. The official Routt County public-records page covers the separate county administrative route.
That county page earns a close look. It shows exactly where a judicial file goes astray when it lands in a county records office instead of the court clerk.
Copy Fees and Certification
Routt County court record charges come from the Judicial Branch request form and fee policies. The current web form lists a lower per-page amount than an older downloadable chart, so requesters should get a current quote rather than blend fee vintages. Supplying the case number helps as well. It can spare you a name-search charge.
| Record Item | Current Stated Charge |
|---|---|
| Copy | $0.25 per page; party or attorney maximum $15 per case |
| Certified or exemplified copy | $20 per document, plus applicable copy charge |
| Name search | $5 |
| Transcript of Judgment | $25 |
| Certificate of Satisfaction | $20 |
| Off-site retrieval | Actual cost |
| Research or redaction | $30 per hour after the first hour, billed in 15-minute increments |
The Judicial Branch fee list provides the current official reference shown below.
Each charge on the fee page ties to a court product. That pairing helps separate a hearing transcript from a Transcript of Judgment.
Routt Off-Site Record Requests
Older Routt County court case records may sit in off-site storage. The clerk posts no official digitization cutoff or transfer year. To speed retrieval, give the case number, filing year, class, party name, and likely court. Ask for a retrieval quote first. Archived or complex files may cost more to pull. The normal three-business-day web-request target may not hold.
Older file: confirm the repository and year range with the Routt clerk before directing a request to the State Archives.
An older case missing from the online calendar does not mean it was destroyed or sealed. That calendar tracks upcoming settings, not the full archive of Routt County court records.
Access Rules for Court Records
Colorado courts follow a layered set of access rules. Chief Justice Directive 05-01 sorts court records into public, remote, restricted, and court-facility-only tiers. Criminal Rule 55.1 adds a guard for criminal files. Sealing public access takes a written order plus a stated justification. Juvenile and criminal justice records carry their own statutory rules. Clerks redact narrow slices of sensitive data instead of sealing whole files.
Colorado access rule: sealed, suppressed, and protected have different meanings. A failed search alone does not establish any of those statuses.

Routt Court Record Access Guide
Not every record you might want is a court record. Colorado keeps Judicial Branch court files separate from criminal-justice agency files, administrative public records, and commercial vendor data. A Routt County ROA, judgment, decree, or sentence order travels the Judicial Branch court-record route. A police report may answer to a different law and a different custodian. Vendor results never count as the official court record.
The Judicial Branch public-records access guide lays out these access distinctions and which office answers for each record type.
That breakdown routes a request to the right desk, whether the court clerk, a criminal-justice custodian, or an administrative records officer. The systems are not interchangeable.
Routt Court Record Custodian Difference
Routt County elects a Clerk and Recorder, and the title trips people up. That office records deeds and plats. It also runs elections and handles motor vehicles, marriage, and vital records. It does not hold Routt District Court or County Court files. A lawsuit, criminal case, protection order, probate file, or court judgment belongs to the Judicial Branch clerk instead. Sending a court docket request to the Clerk and Recorder just delays it.
The county Clerk and Recorder duties page spells out what that separate office actually covers.
A quick check of the duties page keeps a court case request from landing with the wrong custodian. It takes less time than a redirect.
Routt Federal Court Record Route
Federal cases touching Routt County never show up in the state docket search. They sit with the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado, or the Tenth Circuit on appeal. PACER is the official federal retrieval system. It bills by the page, subject to a quarterly fee waiver threshold. RECAP may hold a free copy, but only what another user contributed, so it runs incomplete.
State case numbers and a Judicial Branch ROA will not transfer into the federal CM/ECF format. Identify the court first. Then go to the matching custodian. For a known state matter, the Routt County docket search recovers the case number fastest. Pull that number before requesting records.
Note: Municipal records also remain separate; Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Oak Creek, and Yampa clerks maintain their own municipal files.
